obama on the offensive many moments ago he delivered a passionate speech in denver, just miles from the aurora movie theater where 12 people were shot dead last summer. the president was there calling for action on gun reform and demanding new laws on universal background checks. >> it's commonsense a, by the way, most gun owners, more than 80% agree this makes sense. more than 70% of nra members agree. 90% of the american people agree. so there's no reason we can't do this unless politics is getting in the way. >> the president's right. around 90% of americans support background checks. 87% in a new poll out today. 87% can't agree on anything. this shouldn't be hard. it's clear the american people want change on a range of issues, on stricter gun sale laws, democrats, independents, and the majority of americans want reform. just one problem. republicans don't. on immigration, again, a majority of americans are for path to citizenship. but not the republicans. on gay marriage, once again, a majority of americans, including independents, want change. and, again, republicans are in th

, there is only taxpayer's money. neil: i never thought i'd see the day, president obama putting social security on the chopping block. it is an important start. judging from outcry, he is all but kills granny, it is probably a significant start, why did john boehner call it a little more than a stunt, a stun that is dead on arrival. to hear the speaker tell it, it is because the president is still attaching more tax increases to it. it does not add up. the tax hikes were about closing loopholes, why the fuss now? did republicans do to the president on social security what they hated the president doing to paul ryan on medicare, dismissing him for even trying. time to get debating. scotty, what do you think? >> quite be o obvious, i agree h boehner, that is rare for me. but he is right, these are very moderate cuts, all that obama is doing, trying to do a pr stunt to divide the republicans, encourage the moderate senators to come along, look at his plan. when all it does is raymore taxes after we -- raise more taxes after we just saw billions of taxes raised and not give up enough to the entitle

women in california and president obama noticed one of them this week and he is in trouble, but not with mrs. obama. some liberals are upset with the president is saying the state attorney general pamela harris is easy on the eyes. during a fund-raiser, she is quote, by far the best looking attorney general in the country. now is this really a big deal or much to do about nothing? >> greg: this was a complete horrifying attack on eric holder [ laughter ] >> he was working closely with obama, what am i? he trims his mustache and what does obama do, by the way, baby says good looking a lot. he said it to me many times. if we don't think it's a big deal, i can't get angry. she is good looking. >> andrea: they have a close relationship and they have been friends for years. is it unprofessional for the president or any man to comment on a woman's look in the workplace. >> dana: i think it's all relative. there is a time and place for everything. he saw it as compliment to her. some liberals as how angry and crazy some on the left can be. >> it was angry at bush. >> dana: actuall

directly with him and, quite frankly, if i were barack obama, in the last analysis to prevent a war, i would call him up on the telephone and say, i want to talk to you. >> why is kim pushing obama's button? >> because he's the third generation, and he's 29 or 30 years old. he's proving himself as the new leader of north korea. and he's playing the same kind of brinksmanship that his father and his grandfather played before him. i think just about everyone of these steps has been done before. they've shut down the factory zone that's inside north korea. they have threatened -- made all these threats before. they've shut down and started these nuclear facilities. so we've seen this movie many times before. the nervousness is whether this young man knows how to play brinksmanship as skillfully as his fore bearers, that he won't know when to stop, and that really sort of an accidental war could begin. so i think the administration so far is playing it pretty well. they're putting a missile defense system in place. they're upping the exercises that are done every year, and they're relying

and is recognizable from the bush administration down to the obama administration that peacekeeping operations of the un for all the problems, scandals, and sexual predation and perturb and scandals of ripping off the organization, all of that stuff aside, there is of value that is being provided by peacekeeping operations that is essentially irreplaceable to the united states. we will see is when it comes to places where we're looking to have them perform jobs and would not. >> host: kenneth anderson, what is the u.s. influence here? >> guest: the u.s. influence in the un is one sense bears largely, but in another sense not to. this is a key point about this book. i have been talking almost exclusively about the un and the u.s. relations to wait as a player within the system. the biggest player, the superpower of all of those things are true. but the most important relationship that the u.s. has to the un is not actually as being the biggest player within the un system. it is rather, the united states operates in effect a parallel system of international order, security, but also economic in

president obama got elected to the united states senate from illinois, he and i became friends and i'm probably proudly closest now to president obama. >> for any senate to work with the president, what are the rules of the road that any chief executive needs to know when they come to this town? >> mutual respect, respecting the congress, respecting that these 535 were each individually elected by thousands of people in their districts or in their states. and that means something. an election means something. and so that mute twal respect that members of congress were elected by the people. and even though you're president and you were elected by the all the people there has to be that mutual respect, a mutual understanding that in order to really get the people's business accomplished, we have to talk to one another and work with one another and compromise with one another. and i think that's really happening since president obama was re-elected. >> you decided in 2008 to retire from the house. why? >> well, for my first 12 years i was the majority party, and it's a lot more fun bei

? >> there is no barack obama on that list. he is the absolute standard barer of the democratic party. when he talked about our yourny is not complete and talked about what we need to do, he was really making a case for his third term, and who fills that out remains to be seen but the president is so far and above everybody right now that wants to take his place r place that it's almost unfair to compare any of the republicans to barack obama. >> do you think of those four are viable to go up against a democrat? >> remember they were booing a gay soldier, chanting let him die, applauding the death penalty, but not the death of osama bin laden because president obama was responsible for that. republicans tend to like a governor that cuts taxes. they don't have that person on the short list yet. >> michael: not quite yet. tad, how long -- you know can hillary clinton keep us waiting? how long can she keep the democrats waiting before she can say, i'm running for president? >> i think she can wait a long time. i don't think there has been a stronger candidate for a nomination tha
